Steve McCallum
When basketball programs across the state want to know why
the Mark Morris Boys Basketball program is so consistent
every season, you start with how the program has been built.
The emphasis of fundamentals, teamwork, and developing a
strong work ethic, are key ingredients that determine Mark
Morris basketball success. Steve McCallum has been a pillar of
that success for over 32 years. He has help build that
foundation. His junior varsity teams have been consistent
winners during his long career as an assistant coach. For 7 of
the past 8 seasons, the junior varsity has been the top team in
the GSHL league. Last season, Coach McCallum passed a
huge milestone with his 400th coaching victory at the junior
varsity level. Couple that with his value on the bench during
monarch varsity games with coaches Dave Denny and Bill
Bakamus, and he has won well over 1,000 games as a
Monarch coach! Another milestone is that he has been a head
coach or assistant coach in 8 State Championship games, 6 in
basketball and 2 in volleyball. There is not a program in the
state that wouldn't want Steve McCallum on their side. "Steve
has a simple approach to basketball. He stresses high
percentage basketball, and makes the game easy for our
players to understand. He does a great job with our JV teams,
getting them ready for me, and is on the top of the list of guys I
would want in my fox hole"states Coach Bill Bakamus

Steve has taken on new responsibilities as the yearbook
advisor this year, to go along with his photography courses. He
is an avid outdoorsmen and has favorites stumps he uses for
vantage points when hunting. He has been inducted into the
Mark Morris Hall Of Fame as a coach two different times, for
different sports. His wife Diane makes a mean elk steak, and
she continues to fuel Steve's fire at the dinner table. Their son
Matthew, was a three-year letterman, and played in three state
tournaments as a Monarch.
